Please follow the steps below before your scheduled testing date to make sure the device is ready for your consultant to access when the assessment begins.
Before you start
You will need:
The Citation Cyber NUC and supplied power adapter
An Ethernet connection to the network included within the scope of your assessment
A network connection that allows the NUC to communicate with all agreed in-scope subnets
If Wi-Fi testing is included, the Wi-Fi adapter supplied by Citation Cyber
If you are unsure which network the NUC should be connected to, please contact your Citation Cyber project contact before connecting the device.
1. Connect the NUC to your network
Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the Ethernet port on the NUC.
The connection should place the NUC on the network that has been agreed for the assessment and allow it to communicate with the systems and subnets included within the agreed testing scope.
Please avoid connecting the NUC to a guest, isolated or separate network unless this has specifically been agreed with your Citation Cyber consultant.
2. Connect the power
Connect the supplied power adapter and switch the NUC on.
Once powered on, please leave the device running and connected to the network for the duration of the assessment unless a Citation Cyber consultant asks you to disconnect or restart it.
There is no need to log in to or configure the NUC yourself.
3. Check your firewall
Please ensure that TCP and UDP port 9993 are permitted through your firewall so the NUC can establish the connectivity required for the assessment.
If your organisation operates restrictive firewall or network access policies, please arrange for this to be completed before the scheduled testing date.
If you are unsure whether this has been configured correctly, your IT team should be able to check this for you.
4. Wi-Fi assessments
If your assessment includes Wi-Fi security testing, you will also have been supplied with a Wi-Fi adapter.
Please connect the Wi-Fi adapter to the front USB port of the NUC before the assessment begins.
Unless instructed otherwise by your consultant, please leave the adapter connected throughout the Wi-Fi assessment.
5. Let us know when it is ready
Once the NUC has been:
Powered on
Connected to the correct network
Given access to the agreed in-scope subnets
Allowed the required TCP/UDP 9993 connectivity
Connected to the supplied Wi-Fi adapter, where applicable
Please let your Citation Cyber contact know that the device is ready.
Completing these steps in advance helps us start your assessment on time and avoids testing being delayed while connectivity issues are investigated.
During the assessment
The NUC is a dedicated Citation Cyber security testing device and should only be used for the agreed assessment.
While it is with you, please:
Keep the device somewhere secure
Keep it connected to power and the agreed network during testing
Do not install software or make configuration changes to the device
Do not connect additional USB devices unless instructed by Citation Cyber
Do not move the device to another network without speaking to your consultant
Take reasonable care to prevent the device from being lost, damaged or accessed by unauthorised individuals
If the NUC becomes disconnected or loses power during testing, reconnect it as soon as possible and let your consultant know.
Returning the NUC
Once your assessment has been completed and your Citation Cyber consultant confirms that the device is no longer required, please arrange for it to be returned to us as soon as reasonably possible.
Please package the NUC securely using the packaging provided where available and include any equipment supplied with it, such as:
Power adapter
Wi-Fi adapter
Network accessories supplied by Citation Cyber
For the correct return address or help arranging a shipping label, contact your project contact or [email protected]
Please do not send the device to another Citation Group office or address unless this has been confirmed by the Citation Cyber team.
How we protect your data
Security of customer information is extremely important to us.
The NUC is used solely to support the authorised security assessment being carried out for your organisation. Once the device is returned to Citation Cyber, it is securely wiped and prepared again before being issued for another customer engagement.
This process is designed to ensure that information associated with one customer assessment is not retained on a device when it is subsequently used for another engagement.
Having problems getting connected?
If you have followed the steps above but the device does not appear to be working, please check:
Power: Make sure the NUC is switched on and receiving power.
Network: Check that the Ethernet cable is connected and the network port is active.
Firewall: Confirm TCP and UDP port 9993 are permitted.
Network scope: Check that the NUC has connectivity to the networks and subnets included within the assessment.
Wi-Fi testing: Confirm the supplied Wi-Fi adapter is connected to the front USB port.
If you are still having problems, please contact [email protected] or your Citation Cyber project contact and we will be happy to help.
