How to Find Your Local and Public IP Address

Step-by-step guide on how to locate your local IP address using Command Prompt and your public IP address using Google.

Finding your IP address depends on whether you need your local (private) network address or your public address visible to the internet.

Finding Your Local IP Address via Command Prompt

  1. Open the Windows Start menu, type cmd, and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.

  2. Type ipconfig into the window and press Enter.

  3. Scroll through the text to find your active network connection (usually labeled Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter).

  4. Locate the IPv4 Address, which will typically look like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x. This is your device's local IP address on your home network.

Finding Your Public IP Address via Google

  1. Open any web browser and go to google.com.

  2. Type what is my IP address into the search bar and press Enter.

  3. Your public IP address will appear directly at the top of the search results page.
